Gingerbread House 2009

On Saturday night we made our Gingerbread house. I love making gingerbread houses (from scratch) so I wanted this to be one of our Christmas traditions. I think it would be a really great one, to come up with a new house plan each year and execute it, then display it in the house all month long.

This year was a little different. I didn't plan very good and waited too long so instead of from scratch, I bought a gingerbread kit. The boys are still young so it was the easy way out this year. The kit was great, but the frosting not so much. It was doable but I cut the hole a great size for assembly, not such a great size for the decorating part.

We got the house assembled great, but the decorating was a nightmare. The frosting was not the right consistency and it was too dry. I should have cut a smaller hole on the other side of the bag but I don't think it would have helped all that much. My own frosting would have been better to work with.

I had to remember that this was for Marce and that he did not care what the house looked like in the slightest. He was loving it and having fun. Next year I'll get him more involved. He did a lot of watching this year but loved it just the same. I can see down the road when they can really help and we have more intricate houses that it'll be way fun and something to really look forward to for the whole family. In high school I won 2nd place in a gingerbread making contest. I did a two story log cabin. It was not such a "candy" looking house. I wanted it to look real and have a rustic cabiny look, so I used a lot of pretzels logs, and for the roof I used triscuit crackers sprinkled with powdered sugar. It was exactly what I was going for. There's a lot of different kinds of things you can do.

All in all, this was a disaster. We did it at night so Phoenix ended up needing to go to bed, and Sharrid fell asleep after the assembly. The frosting was aweful to work with and just didn't work. The sprinkles made a huge mess because they wouldn't stick to the "too dry frosting". Better luck next year....and better planning and preparation next year on my part!

What a bummer, but like you said...this year they're young enough not to care how it looks. It's all about creating those memories and traditions early.

Interesting to see YOU in a sweatshirt and Marce in his underwear. He must be pretty warm-blooded. Maybe he was just really excited about doing that gingerbread house and started getting "hot under the collar!"

It's just that after you assemble the house, it has to sit for 15 minutes so we were in transition of doing the house, letting it sit, and getting him into his pajamas...that's why he appears clothesless in the last few pictures.
