Seriously!

Marcelus likes Spider-man. He has things that have him on it, like bed sheets and chairs and toys and so I bought him an animated DVD of the Saturday morning cartoon for Christmas. He had previously seen it a few times on TV. Today, watching it for the first time I hear 2 swear words! The H word and the D word. I can't believe this! It was bad enough I had to get used to the fact that shows like Spider-man and other really weird shows had replaced the Mickey Mouse and Tom and Jerry cartoons I grew up on, but then now they aren't even appropriate for children. They are cartoons on Saturday morning of super heroes! They are meant for children and you can bet there aren't any 16 year old boys watching these cartoons. Why would there be swearing and cussing in Spider-man cartoons. I'm so upset. What's a young boy supposed to love? Superheroes are for little boys, or so I thought! My toddler is transitioning into a little boy. He isn't going to love Care Bears and Backyardigans forever. I thought he was safe by watching a cartoon of a superhero on a Saturday morning but I was wrong. This transition might be a little harder than I thought. It just reminds me of the fact that we own certain movies that are animated and meant for children that are not appropriate that I need to get rid of now that Marce is starting to understand what is said and done in movies, movies like Madagascar and Shrek. I guess I don't have to get rid of them, but they need to go in the adult section at least. How sad is that. Adults like animation as well as kids. I am not saying that there shouldn't be these adult animated movies, but they need to advertise them as that then, and not advertise towards the kids. This of course is not going to happen, and it will just get worse and worse so we as parents better pay close attention. By the way, I never heard any swearing on Saturday mornings, only on our DVD...how ironic. I guess I'll be getting rid of it...unless any of you adults love Spider-man.......I didn't think so.

Wow - that totally shocks me! Hollywood is creeping into our homes like never before. It takes a young mother with scruples of her own to notice these things and make a difference. Good for you...

Glad you caught that! I am totally disgusted by that too. Those Hollywood people are shameless. They know what they're doing, too.

I was kinda oblivious to the cussing thing until Brayden mimicked something Will Smith said in Men in Black that contained the D word... oops! Those movies have now been shelfed for when he's old enough to understand what's appropriate. We are going through a Thomas the Train phase right now, so there's no worries about those DVDS... whew...

I totally agree with you on the animated movies being geared toward the kids and not the adults. Even though they contain more of the adult humor, language, and even sexual connotations. It's sad that animated movies need to be moved to the adult section of the video shelf. It also frustrates me that cartoons even hint at stuff like that. Take the Ninja Turtles for example.....they are constantly saying stuff like "what the shell"....and "have a shell of a time." That's obviously hinting at an adult word. Wouldn't you say. I forget how bad things are since I don't have kids. Thanks for the reminder that even cartoons can be iffy.

I had a simular experience with Batman cartoons. Batman goes on a date and the next scene is the morning and she is wearing his shirt with no pants. Seriously!

wow, yeah. We're going to have to approve or dissaprove just about everything our kids do...don't know how that will all work out, the pre teen, teen years should be interesting...the key is to teach them early so that hopefully they will be converted to the Gospel of their own free will before it gets to be like a crossroads when they are teens/young adults. I am already finding out that it is much different now than it was when I was being raised in almost every way. Safety, schooling, and Media to name just a few...
