This is the name of the book I've been reading. I've been taking my time with it cause it's non fiction which has been nice. It's hard to explain what the book is about but it's been a very true book. I'd almost call it a parenting book geared towards Black families. It's been a really good book and I'm glad I have it for future reference too. There was a part I wanted to post, but it's too long. I also wanted to post a quote found in the book near the end of a chapter called "Teach Your Children Well" The quote kind of gave me hope and made me believe a little more that I don't have to stress so much about my dreams and goals, and if I don't get to do something I really wanted to or I don't become something I wanted to become that it can be alright. Don't get me wrong, I am not slacking on any goal or dream I have, but it made me think that the world will not end if I am not this or do that. We aren't perfect. Here's the quote. You've probably heard it before. I have, but forgot about it.
"The tragedy in life does not lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. It isn't a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is certainly a calamity not to dream. It is not a disaster to be unable to capture your ideal, but it is a disaster to have no ideal to capture."
I'm glad I read this quote thinking what I thought instead of "oh, I don't have many goals and I really don't know what my dreams are" I have plenty of goals and I know exactly what my dreams are...I'm glad I'm that way. I love the quote in the movie "Rudy" where his friend Pete says to him on his birthday "Dreams are what makes life tolerable" and my favorite part in a great movie called "Dave" is at a part where the first lady asks "If you were still in there...what would you do?" (in there meaning in office, president) and he looks over at her and he says "...a lot of things" and you can tell he's thinking of all those things right then. It's really a dreamy moment. That is my favorite part, and actually that's one of my favorite movies that isn't an old classic or a musical. I love the music score but I don't think there's a soundtrack. Netflix it, it's so good. Those who have seen these movies will know which parts I'm talking about. To those who haven't, you'll just have to Netflix them.
I love certain parts of movies or just things or people cause I can relate to them so well,..like...it's exactly what I would have said or done, or when you come across a quote or something somebody said and you think "That's exactly how I feel. I feel the same way." and your heart just kind of has that special almost relieved beat at the time you hear it. Wow, I love it when that happens. It's like when you hear a song and you just think "man, I wish I would have written that song" (if you write music like me) because it's exactly what you were thinking or how you feel. That's how I feel about John Lennon's "Imagine" and a slew of other songs. It's just like what I was talking about on a very early post I did called "Cryin' Times" The parts of movies that I cry on mean nothing to the next person, but they mean everything to me. Everyone relates to different things, and people think of different things when they see or hear something. I love those things in life that do that to you.
