Memories of Grandpa Willard

My Grandpa Willard (Dad's dad) passed away yesterday morning. He was 94 years old. My Grandparents have always been really old to me, so I might not have memories of family trips with them or "playing" with them, but the memories I have are still just as special to me. I was thinking of them this morning in the shower and thought I would tribute my Grandpa by posting them on this family blog of ours. For those of you who are not family members or did not meet or know my Grandpa, you might not get or understand what all of these memories refering to or mean, but my family, and any "Willard" for that matter will, so I apologize for that. Here are my memories of my Grandpa, Earl Spencer Willard:

  • He always grew a winter beard
  • He laughed more than he talked
  • He was very quiet and only piped up to say something once in a blue moon, grandma ruled all conversations...
  • He loved to walk through the garden
  • He loved to sit and rock on the back porch
  • He muted all of the commercials
  • He always had a little bowl of "Good & Plenty" candy on his side table...YUCK!
  • He often had a toothpick in his mouth
  • He wore the cutest outfits, work pants I guess they were, either dark brown, tan or baby blue (my faves) a long sleeved plaid shirt to match and ALWAYS suspenders, with work boots.
  • He had a little hat collection and wore cool "grandpa" hats
  • He gave kisses on the lips (I loved that...)
  • He had lots of "toys" in the garage, like fishing gear and workbench tools.
  • He loved silly song night and cried at everything that was hillarious
  • He "leaned" a little bit and used a cane
  • His trees were always trimmed
  • He had a really cool tree swing in the backyard

That was fun and made me think of all the great memories I have of my Grandma Willard too. I'm sorry I don't believe I have a picture of him to post, my camera is too new as I only see them once a year, actually at Thanksgiving. I do have some really sweet footage of my Grandparents playing with my son Marcelus. I look forward to seeing my Grandma and all the Willards that will be there at Thanksgiving this year.

THANKS FOR ALL THE MEMORIES GRANDPA!
